Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) is a striking native perennial wildflower of western North America, prized for its large, spherical clusters of star-shaped, pink to purplish flowers that bloom from late spring through summer, creating a dramatic focal point in gardens, prairies, and naturalized landscapes. This robust herbaceous plant typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall with sturdy stems, broad opposite leaves covered in soft velvety hairs that give the foliage a silvery-blue-green appearance, and a spreading rhizomatous habit that allows it to form attractive colonies over time without becoming overly aggressive. The fragrant, nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while serving as an important larval host for monarch butterflies, whose caterpillars feed exclusively on its foliage. In late summer to fall, the plant produces distinctive, warty seed pods that split open to release flat seeds equipped with silky parachutes for wind dispersal. Well-suited to full sun and dry to medium, well-drained soils, Showy Milkweed thrives in challenging conditions such as prairies, roadsides, and disturbed sites, making it a valuable choice for pollinator gardens, monarch conservation efforts, xeriscaping, and ecological restoration projects across the western and central United States.

  • Milkweed & Monarchs: Asclepias speciosa, or "Showy Milkweed" is the main host plant for the Monarch Butterfly! Monarchs have been declining for the past few decades due to deforestation.
  • Purpose: Milkweed is the main food source for the Monarch butterfly and they need it to survive the journey to South America. By planting more milkweed, you can directly affect the success of their migratory pattern, and their population!
  • Growth: Showy Milkweed will grow to a mature height of roughly 18" to 30" tall. They can spread about 20" to 24" wide and require full sunlight to grow.
  • Butterfly Garden: Milkweed is key to achieving a butterfly garden. It can be paired with other flowers such as Zinnias, Yarrow, Coneflowers, Bee Balm, Sunflowers & Coreopsis for an array of color.
  • Quality: All seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.5" wide by 5" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness: All seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!
